Rhode Island Energy
Community Solar Resources for Residents with Rhode Island Energy
Dual Billing
With dual billing, you’ll receive a statement from Rhode Island Energy and a statement from Nautilus Solar:
- Rhode Island Energy Utility Bill: Shows your total monthly energy usage. Your solar generation is deducted from these charges, reducing the amount you owe to your utility company.
- Nautilus Solar statement: The solar energy generated by your solar farm is not free. Instead, it's billed separately by Nautilus at a 10% discount on what Rhode Island Energy would charge you.
Yes, you pay two bills, but you are still saving money every month.
What Does Your Nautilus Solar Statement Look Like?

Your monthly statement from Nautilus Solar includes your share of solar energy generated by the community solar farm. You can find your generation details under "This Month's Solar Credits".
In the example above, 160.00 kWhs of energy were generated by the solar farm and charged at the standard utility rates, but at a 10% discount! This customer saved $3.29 this month with Nautilus Solar.
How does this work with your Rhode Island Energy bill?
It’s important to remember that the deducted solar energy is not free. Instead, this energy is charged separately by Nautilus Solar at a 10% discount.
The example below is a section from a Rhode Island Energy statement, found on page two under 'Billing Summary'.

The solar energy generated by your community solar farm is deducted from your utility bill at the utility's rates. You'll see this listed under 'Total Other Charges/Adjustments'.
In this example, $32.87 is deducted and instead billed by Nautilus at a discount.
After this deduction, the customer owes the utility $73.49, which includes delivery charges and any remaining energy usage not covered by solar. This example also includes a previous balance of $27.28 ($67.01-39.73).
Supply Charges represent the cost of generating energy for your home or business.
Delivery charges represent the cost to move electricity through the grid to your home or business.
When will I receive my Nautilus statements?
Rhode Island Energy will likely send you a statement just a few days after your billing period ends. Your invoice for the same period from Nautilus Solar Energy may lag by 1-2 months. This delay reflects the time it takes for Rhode Island Energy to send us details about your monthly solar credit generation.
When will I receive my first bill from Nautilus?
Once we place you on an active solar farm, you can expect your first invoice within 1-3 billing cycles.
If your farm is still under construction, it may take several months before the farm starts sending energy into the electric grid. Rest assured, we'll keep you updated on the status of your solar farm.
