Will I really save money? How much?
YES. Harvesting solar power is less expensive than other forms of energy and we pass that savings along to you - lowering your monthly bill by a guaranteed amount! The amount of those savings will depend on your usage, the state your home or business resides, and your income level. Visit our solar calculator to get an idea of your savings.
How soon will I see savings?
How soon you see savings depends on the status of your community solar farm.
If your solar farm is already generating power you can see your solar credits on your electricity bill as soon as the next billing cycle. If your solar farm is under construction, it may take a few months until you start to see your solar credits. We aim to get everyone on an active solar farm but sometimes, we have more demand than space so we have to assign a few people to an upcoming solar farm. When this happens, we will send you updates via email or our subscriber newsletters.
How is my portion or share of the local community solar farm calculated?
Your share is based on your 12-month historical usage in kilowatt hours (kWh) divided by the estimated annual solar energy generated from the project. This determines your “allotted percentage” or share, which is around 0.5% of the farm on average.
How do you calculate how many solar credits I earn each month?
Each month, your solar credits are calculated by multiplying your allotted percentage share (typically about 0.5% of the farm on average) by the total monthly solar energy generated by your local community solar farm.
The number of monthly solar credits you receive depends on the total energy generated by a community solar farm, not just your energy usage.

What is a solar credit?
A solar credit is a type of energy credit, a renewable energy incentive created by your local state government to encourage residents and businesses to reduce their energy use and move to clean energy.
Energy Credits are issued for specific energy-saving measures such as using energy-efficient appliances, purchasing electric vehicles, installing rooftop solar or subscribing to community solar. They are typically issued as a tax credit, a rebate, or a utility credit, such as with community solar.
As a subscriber to a community solar farm, you will receive solar credits on your monthly utility statement or Nautilus Solar statement. The solar credits you receive will be credited towards your monthly statement as a discount based on the location of your home or business, and possibly your income level as well.
Who can benefit from solar credits?
Local Utilities
They satisfy their state-mandated renewable energy goals and earn solar credits by purchasing solar power from energy providers such as Nautilus Community Solar to supply the grid with clean energy.
Community Solar Providers
The local utility “pays” for the solar power it receives by transferring the solar credits to the energy provider, such as Nautilus Community Solar.
Community Solar Subscribers
Nautilus Community Solar passes a portion of the solar credits back to their community solar subscribers. The difference between the total deducted from their utility company’s bill and the total billed by the owner/operator is the subscriber’s savings.
How is my bill calculated between my utility company and Nautilus Solar Energy?
Depending on the state your home resides - and in some cases, your income level - you will see a different amount of savings on your bill:
% Savings per State:
5%: CO
10%: DE, IL MD, MN, and NY (note: low-to-moderate income qualify for 25% in MD only)
15%: ME
If you'd like to see your savings, you can use our savings calculator and provide your average monthly electricity bill charges to calculate your potential savings.
Is the discount on my entire electric bill?
The discount applied in your state is for the portion of your electric bill that comes from the electricity generated by the community solar farm. Over the course of the year, you are guaranteed this discount through monthly solar credits applied to your account. In some states, subscribers who are below the median average income for their area could obtain a higher discount.
If I get a discount, how much money will that be?
To give you a clear idea of how much you'll save with a discount, let's use an example. If your monthly electricity charges are $100, a 10% discount would save you $10 each month. The same concept applies to your monthly bill when it is $200 where a 10% discount would save you $20 each month.
The dollar amount you save will depend on your actual electricity usage, the state your home or business resides in, and in some cases your income level. Over the course of a year, these savings can really add up! To try additional scenarios, visit our savings calculator.

Why do you need my date of birth?
Great question! We need your date of birth to make sure you're 18 years or older, which is the age requirement to have the authority to sign up your household for our clean energy services. It's just one of the ways we ensure everything is in order for your new account. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
Why do you need my utility credentials?
Adding your utility information is very important for a couple of reasons. First, it allows us to partner your utility account with your utility company for the delivery of solar credits while ensuring the billing process with your community solar provider, like us at Nautilus, goes smoothly. This way, you automatically receive solar credits for your share of the solar energy produced. The second reason, is to allow us to have visibility into your household usage. Our solar farms have limited space and a set amount of energy produced. So, knowing your usage allows us to allocate the right amount of household usage to your account. This keeps us from giving those nice solar credits away to someone else!
