We Go Way Back
Two Cups of Coffee and a Starbucks Napkin
In 2006, co-founders Jim Rice and Laura Stern turned a vision into reality, sketching the initial blueprint of Nautilus Solar on the back of a napkin in a local Starbucks.
From being the first to apply the IPP business model to distributed generation solar in 2007, to a series of transformative events including investments, leadership shifts, and the acquisition by Power Sustainable, the company continues to stand out as a leader in the solar energy movement and its evolving landscape.
Today, under the leadership of CEO Jeffrey Cheng, Nautilus Solar continues to thrive and expand, setting new standards in community solar.

Our Name and Symbolism
The Nautilus name stems from the USS Nautilus, the world’s first operational nuclear-powered submarine, reflecting our co-Founder Jim Rice’s background as a Navy Submarine Veteran. Similarly, our logo is inspired by the chambered nautilus shell, symbolizing grace, growth, expansion, and renewal – all key elements of our journey at Nautilus Solar Energy.
